The body in relationship

Eight load-bearing joints and one connected system.

Within the Postural Alignment framework Nina uses, eight major joints are described as the body's load-bearing points. Their relationship influences how weight is organised through the body while the spine maintains its natural curves.

The site of discomfort is not always the whole story.

Posture Alignment looks at relationships across the body rather than assuming the place you feel something is the only area worth observing. This is an educational and movement-based perspective, not a diagnosis.

Stacked joints, balanced load.

In the aligned posture Nina works towards, the load joints sit one over another. Seen from the front they are level and symmetrical; seen from the side they fall along a single vertical line while the spine keeps its natural curves.

From the front

  • Shoulders level, left and right at the same height
  • Elbows straight and at your sides
  • Hips level, left and right at the same height
  • Knees straight and facing forward
  • Feet pointing straight ahead and parallel

From the side

  • Ear in line with the shoulder, head not forward
  • Shoulder over hip, not in front of it
  • Hip over knee, pelvis neutral
  • Knee over ankle, not forward or back
  • Ankle under knee, feet flat and pointing forward

Adapted from Pete Egoscue's description of a symmetrical "S-curve" spine and a musculoskeletal framework built on right angles and parallel lines.
